Maintenance

Plaque on teeth can turn into calculus (tartar) within 24 hours if not removed. Daily home cleaning helps control plaque and tartar, but certain areas are harder to clean and require special attention.

After completing periodontal treatment, dentists and dental hygienists recommend regular maintenance cleanings (periodontal cleanings) usually four times a year. During these cleanings, the depth of gum pockets will be checked to ensure their health. Plaque and calculus that are challenging to remove on a daily basis will be eliminated from above and below the gum line.

In addition to your periodontal cleaning and evaluation, your appointment will typically include:

  1. Examination of diagnostic x-rays (radiographs): X-rays are crucial for detecting decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss. They also help determine the positions of teeth and roots.

  2. Examination of existing restorations: The current fillings, crowns, and other dental restorations will be checked for any issues or signs of damage.

  3. Examination of tooth decay: All tooth surfaces will be inspected to identify any signs of decay.

  4. Oral cancer screening: A thorough examination of the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, cheek tissues, and gums will be conducted to detect any indications of oral cancer.

  5. Oral hygiene recommendations: The dentist will review and recommend oral hygiene aids as necessary. This may include electric toothbrushes, special periodontal brushes, fluorides, rinses, and other products.

  6. Teeth polishing: Stains and plaque that are not effectively removed during regular tooth brushing and scaling will be removed through teeth polishing.

Maintaining good oral hygiene practices and regularly attending periodontal cleanings are crucial for preserving dental health and effectively managing periodontal disease.
