At-Home Care for Orthodontic Soreness

Proper at-home care for managing soreness during Invisalign treatment is important. Here are some tips to help alleviate discomfort:

  1. Over-the-counter pain relievers: If you experience soreness, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen as directed by the instructions and your healthcare provider.

  2. Soft diet: Stick to a soft diet for the first few days after receiving a new set of aligners or when you experience significant discomfort. Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods that can exacerbate soreness.

  3. Cold compress: Applying a cold compress or ice pack to the outside of your mouth can help reduce swelling and numb the area, providing temporary relief from soreness.

  4. Orthodontic wax: If certain areas of your aligners are causing irritation or rubbing against your gums or cheeks, you can use orthodontic wax provided by your orthodontist to create a barrier between the aligners and sensitive areas.

  5. Oral rinses: Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater to soothe any sore spots. Mix half a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water and swish it around your mouth for about 30 seconds before spitting it out.

  6. Follow aligner schedule: Ensure that you're following the recommended schedule for changing your aligners. Gradual, consistent movement can help minimize discomfort.

  7. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your mouth moist, which can reduce irritation and discomfort.

Remember, some soreness or discomfort is normal during the initial stages of Invisalign treatment or when transitioning to a new set of aligners. However, if the pain is severe, persists for an extended period, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, it's important to contact your orthodontist for further guidance.
